President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the Chess in Slums Africa initiative, describing it as a transformative project that aligns with his administration’s vision to leave no child behind without wasting any talent.

The President made this known on Monday when he received Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess in Slums Africa and Guinness World Record holder for the longest marathon chess game at his private residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Lauding Onakoya’s remarkable journey from the streets of Lagos to global recognition, President Tinubu commended his use of chess as a tool to uplift underprivileged children and foster critical thinking and discipline among Nigerian youth.

“Through chess, he opens minds and transforms lives in communities that are too often overlooked,” the President said. “Tunde’s journey reflects the resilience and brilliance of Nigeria’s youth.”

Tinubu assured the young innovator of the federal government’s readiness to partner with him to scale the initiative across Nigeria.

“I would love to see how his work can be replicated nationwide,” Tinubu said. “I am looking forward to seeing him in Abuja to hear how the government can support him. Nigeria is proud of him, and we will walk with him.”

He described the initiative as a shining example of citizen-driven development, adding that it resonates with his Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in the areas of youth empowerment, education, and community inclusion.

Onakoya, a celebrated chess coach and advocate for educational equity, has organised several interventions in Lagos slums such as Majidun (Ikorodu), Makoko, and Oshodi, introducing children to chess as a means of improving cognitive development, confidence, and social mobility.

His recent feat, breaking the world record for the longest continuous chess marathon has further spotlighted his mission and drawn global attention to the potential of African youth when given the right support.

The endorsement by President Tinubu marks a significant milestone for the Chess in Slums Africa project and opens new possibilities for its expansion into underserved communities across the nation.
