As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, Dr Raymond Edoh has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, calling on young Nigerians to remain steadfast in building a stronger, more inclusive nation.

Speaking on 12 June, Dr Edoh—youth advocate and public commentator—highlighted the day as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made to secure Nigeria’s democratic path since June 12, 1993.

“This day is not just a celebration, but a reflection on our democratic journey,” he said. “It reminds us to renew our commitment to building a society where every citizen can thrive.”

Dr Edoh commended Tinubu’s administration for its drive towards economic recovery and democratic deepening. He pointed to policy reforms designed to stimulate investment and national growth.

“President Tinubu’s leadership signifies a renewed commitment to democratic values and economic transformation,” he stated. “As youths, who make up the majority of our population, we have a vital role to play in this journey.”

Referencing the National Bureau of Statistics, Dr Edoh noted that Nigeria’s economy is projected to grow by 3.3%—a promising outlook despite global headwinds.

“Our hard work and innovation as youths can help drive this recovery,” he said. “By building businesses, participating in community development, and staying politically active, we can help turn this projection into reality.”

On political participation, Dr Edoh urged young Nigerians to go beyond protest and complaints, instead taking part in decision-making through legal and constructive means.

“Our vote is our voice, and we must use it wisely,” he asserted. “We must also advocate for policies that serve our generation and hold leaders accountable.”

Citing findings from the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development, he stressed that youth engagement is critical for national development.

“We must educate ourselves about the issues affecting our communities and engage in meaningful dialogue. It is through understanding and collaboration that positive change emerges.”

Dr Edoh also highlighted the importance of education in empowering future leaders. Citing UNESCO’s 2023 report, he underscored how access to higher education can significantly reduce poverty and bolster economic growth.

“Young people should prioritise education and skill-building. This is how we prepare for the jobs of tomorrow and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress,” he said.

On national unity, Dr Edoh called for greater solidarity across ethnic, religious, and political lines.

“For Nigeria to reach its full potential, we must embrace our diversity. Unity is the key to sustainable progress,” he said.

He pointed to Tinubu’s inclusive governance style as a positive example, noting efforts to balance regional development and political representation—citing research from the Centre for Democracy and Development that ties national cohesion to long-term stability.

As Democracy Day concludes, Dr Edoh reaffirmed his personal commitment to advocating for a better Nigeria and challenged citizens—especially the youth—to lead with hope, purpose and patriotism.

“Let us honour those who fought for our democracy by safeguarding it. The Nigeria we dream of is within reach if we work together. Our collective effort today will shape a brighter tomorrow,” he concluded.
