Preserve Democracy Against Military Interference

Nigerians have been urged to unite, preserve and strengthen the country’s democracy as neighboring countries in the region face military resurgence in governance.

The call came from the national coordinator of the Human Rights Research and Advocacy Center (HURRAC), Zubair Muhammad, while speaking to our correspondent in Kano yesterday.

He said, “At a time when neighboring countries are witnessing the resurgence of military coups, Nigerians must unite to preserve and strengthen our democratic institutions.

“We are partners in progress and should join hands to ensure that we live in peace and enjoy democratic freedom.”

The rights activist called on Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s heroes and actively uphold democratic values.

He said Nigerians should not see June 12 as a day for celebration alone but also as a reminder for renewed commitment to democracy.

“We must honour the memories of those who struggled for Nigeria’s independence and democratic freedom,” he added.

He further stressed the need to inculcate democratic values in school children by making them understand human rights and democratic principles from an early age.

He said nurturing such values was critical for building a generation that respects the rule of law, civic responsibility and peaceful coexistence.

He added that as part of its commitment to this course, HURRAC facilitated the establishment of human rights clubs in selected secondary schools across Kano State, with a plan to expand the programme to 100 more schools before the end of the year.
