In an interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, the soulful vocalist, who was part of the powerhouse roster that defined Chocolate City’s golden era shared that she stepped away from making music to focus on raising her daughter.

“I stepped away from music to focus on my daughter. Being an artist meant I was always on the move, and she stayed with my family while I pursued my career. Eventually, I realised I needed to pause and be present for her,” she said.

Ruby added that the decision, though difficult, was ultimately rewarding. “Taking that break was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It strengthened our bond, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. Music will always be there, but family comes first.”

Ruby who has a repertoire of songs like Kale Ni and an E.P , recently released ‘FREE’ and ‘SO MUCH MORE’ She stated that as a Rhythm & Blues singer, the songs were personal to her as she faced betrayal and hurt from people she trusted most.

“My new songs were brewed out of things I faced and God brought me through and I am stronger now emotionally. Betrayal and hurt from people I trusted inspired me deeply.

She also spoke candidly about personal struggles that inspired her new music, including emotional pain and body image issues.

“The pain was heavy, but I realized holding onto it only harmed me. So, I chose to forgive and move on for my own peace,” she said. “I also learned that forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation, and that’s okay.

Not every relationship can be fixed, and life goes on. This is what the song Free is about.”

Addressing her single So Much More, Ruby revealed that it was inspired by her battles with self-image. “My struggles with body image played a role in inspiring me. I faced criticism about my size and looks, and for a while, it shook my confidence,” she admitted.

Now back in the spotlight with renewed purpose, Ruby Gyang is using her voice not just to entertain, but to empower others navigating similar journeys.
