In a move to strengthen Nigeria’s livestock sector, the federal government and the German International Cooperation (GIZ) have agreed to establish grazing facilities across selected rural local government areas in the country.

The minister of livestock development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, made this known during a courtesy visit by Dr Karin Jansen, First secretary and head of cooperation at the German Embassy who led a delegation to his office in Abuja on Friday.

According to the minister, the collaboration will focus on setting up well-structured livestock centres supported by fodder production, pasture development and improved breeding practices.

He said each centre would be equipped with micro earth dams and boreholes to ensure year-round access to water and grazing resources for herders.

“Our goal is to promote a more sedentary livestock production system that improves dairy quality and productivity while also reducing conflict linked to open grazing,” Maiha said.

Dr Jansen highlighted GIZ’s ongoing projects across Nigeria and called for deeper cooperation with the livestock ministry to enhance productivity and peace in rural communities.

“Incorporating livestock development into peacebuilding strategies is critical. Establishing grazing reserves at the local level and demonstration ranches in selected states can help change perceptions and promote modern practices among pastoralists,” she said.

She reiterated Germany’s commitment to support Nigeria in expanding its livestock value chain and building more resilient rural economies.
