In an effort to enhance sports development across Nigeria, Comrade Philip Shaibu, the new director-general of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), has expressed his commitment to partnering with state governors and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The immediate-past deputy governor of Edo State was recently appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the director-general of NIS to implement reforms that will help reposition the training institute, established in 1974 with the objective of improving Nigeria’s performance in international sporting competitions.

The institute is responsible for producing top-rated coaches, sports managers, and sports scientists, as well as conducting essential sports research.

Shaibu made these remarks after watching the final match of the Governor Diri Douye Governor’s Cup tournament, held at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where Eternal Grace Ministry FC (EGM FC) faced off against Advance Dreams FA.

“Yes, I am happy to be here to witness this final game. We are ready to partner with all state Governors and the FCT in our task ahead. It is essential that we measure up globally in terms of the calibre of our coaches,” Shaibu stated.

His presence at the final of the esteemed Bayelsa State Governor’s Cup brought added glamour and excitement to the thrilling event. In attendance were the tournament’s sponsor, Governor Diri Douye, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Ibrahim Musa Gusau, NFF Technical Director Austin Eguavoen, and former Super Eagles Coach Samson Siasia.
