The newly appointed director-general, Comrade Philip Shaibu has vowed to revive the National Institute of Sports in Surulere, Lagos, which he described as fallen into a state of disrepair.
He disclosed this during a tour he conducted yesterday. He encountered a facility plagued by neglect and deterioration. The dormitories, offices, and sanitation facilities were found in a lamentable condition, with visible signs of decay throughout the premises. Furthermore, critical infrastructure such as the water supply and electricity systems has been left unattended, necessitating immediate intervention.
Moved by the dismal state of the institute, Shaibu has pledged to revitalize the institution. Recognising the extensive challenges ahead, he emphasised the need for prompt and decisive action to restore the National Institute of Sports to its former status.
In response to the facility’s pressing condition, Shaibu announced a state of emergency to facilitate urgent renovations aimed at rejuvenating the institute.
The situation highlights a broader issue concerning the maintenance of sports facilities in Nigeria, underscoring the importance of governmental support in ensuring these institutions can fulfil their mandate effectively. The call for action has sparked a renewed interest in the future of sports administration and training in the country.
