The Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC) has vowed to sustain its undergraduate scholarship scheme among other interventions in the education sector of the state.
The general manager of ASOPADEC, Venerable Joshua Onyeike, disclosed this to LEADERSHIP after distributing 90 desks and 24 tables to three primary schools in Ukwa West local government area.
The schools are Central School, Obehie Asa; Community Primary School, Umunteke Asa; and Community Primary School, Umuiku Ozaar, Asa.
Represented by the Director in charge of the Education Unit, Mrs Ihuoma Onuegbu, the General Manager said the donations were aimed at complementing the educational drive of the state government.
She noted, “The gesture was in fulfilment of the commission’s resolve to provide educational aids to pupils and students across schools in the oil-producing communities and beyond.
“We have also been renovating school blocks and registering indigent students for both the West African School Certificate Examination and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board examination.”
Responding to the donations, the headmistresses of the schools, Mrs Regina Onwuka and Mrs Florence Nlewem, expressed gratitude to both ASOPADEC and the state government for the gesture.
In a contribution, a teacher and a pupil from Central School, Obehie, Mrs Oluchi Ogbonna and Miss Chinaza Chinaemerem, said the donations came when they were most needed.
