Bauchi State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Suleiman, has responded to growing calls urging him to contest in the 2027 governorship election, asserting that his current focus remains on governance and legislative service, not future political ambitions.

The call for Suleiman to throw his hat into the ring was made earlier this week by the Bauchi State Coalition of Youth and Civil Society Groups. In a press conference, the coalition praised the Speaker’s leadership, describing him as a “dedicated and capable leader” with the requisite experience and track record to lead the Bauchi State from 2027.

But, in a measured and firm response, Speaker Suleiman stated that while he appreciated the confidence shown in him, the time now was not the right to discuss the 2027 governorship race.

“While we sincerely appreciate the compliments and support expressed by the Bauchi State Coalition of Youth and Civil Society Groups, we believe that now is not the appropriate time to declare interest in any political position, including the 2027 gubernatorial race,” the Speaker said.

He continued, “This is not the time. There is still a lot to do. Our primary focus at this moment is on representation and governance, serving the interests of our constituents faithfully.”

Speaker Suleiman reiterated his commitment to his current responsibilities, stressing that his attention remains on fulfilling the mandate given to him by the people of his constituency.

“We hold a mandate entrusted to us by our constituents, and it is our duty to act in their best interests,” he said. “When the time is right to pursue such political ambitions, it would be done transparently and in consultation with party leaders, political allies, and the people of Bauchi State.”

He concluded his statement by calling on supporters and stakeholders to continue backing his legislative efforts. “Our commitment remains to serve with integrity and to prioritise the welfare of our constituents above all,” he added.
