Cross River State has emerged as the fourth-best-performing state of the 12 top-performing states in Nigeria’s 2024 National Examination Council (NECO).
The state commissioner for Education, Associate Professor Stephen Odey, made the remarks Monday in Calabar during an interactive session with LEADERSHIP.
Odey, who spoke shortly after a protracted meeting with stakeholders in the state’s Education sector, averred that the 2024 NECO result is 72.1% scores for candidates with five credits and above, including English and mathematics, against 68.9% in 2023.
“That means we made appreciable progress. I commend all of you who were involved because our rating
has improved, and we need to do more so that the governor will be happy.
“I must commend the principals and teachers who contributed to our state’s upward rating,” he said.
Odey commended stakeholders for their contributions to the state’s improved performance and urged the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to expedite action on implementing teachers’ promotions to encourage increased productivity.
The Commissioner warned that any teacher or staff member found involved in examination malpractice or any act of lawlessness would face disciplinary action and sanctions.
He also cautioned principals and headteachers against collecting illegal levies, emphasising that such actions undermine the integrity of teachers and the educational system.
Odey stressed that teachers are character-builders and should not be seen as lawless and indisciplined, calling for accountability among teachers.
He urged teachers to shun lawlessness, warning that any staff member caught engaging in lawlessness or indiscipline would face the wrath of the ministry.
