President Bola Tinubu has described the newly completed Inner Northern Expressway (INEX) as a “symbol of progress,” underscoring his administration’s commitment to infrastructure-driven economic growth.

Represented by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, the President commissioned the right-hand service carriageway linking Route 3 to the Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX), also known as Murtala Muhammed Way—a project expected to ease congestion and boost connectivity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The project, a critical component of the FCT master plan, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, and boost economic activities in Abuja.

“It is with great pride and fulfilment that I stand before you today to commission this vital carriageway. This infrastructure is designed to improve urban mobility for millions of commuters, residents, and businesses in our capital,” he said.

The President commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his leadership in ensuring the project’s timely completion, stating, “You have contributed to something larger than the roadway. You have contributed to the future of our capital.”

President Tinubu emphasised that the new expressway would decongest key junctions and stimulate economic growth in adjoining districts.

“This road will open more opportunities for businesses, housing, and investments. We must ensure no region is left behind in our infrastructure revolution. I appeal to you to obey traffic rules and treat these assets respectfully. They belong to all of us and future generations,” he said.

In his remarks, Wike disclosed that the road, initially awarded in 2014 for ₦7 billion, faced delays and cost variations, eventually reaching ₦31 billion due to inflation.

“When we assumed office, this project was stalled. But under President Tinubu’s leadership, we resolved critical obstacles, including issuing Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) to industries in the area, which will create over 40,000 jobs,” Wike said.

He also highlighted ongoing negotiations for tax concessions to facilitate the completion of the left-hand carriageway and urged swift approval from the Ministry of Finance.

Wike swiped at potential political opponents, declaring that the administration’s achievements speak for themselves.

“Those seeking election in the FCT should tell the people what they have done. However, the projects are our campaign, roads, bus terminals, and schools. Let no one waste money on empty promises. Monkey dey jumps because of a tree near a tree. If there is no tree, his leg will break!” he said.

He added that Tinubu’s support has been instrumental, with 10 major projects commissioned in 10 days, five by the President himself and others by top government officials.
