KWASU Rolls Out Measures To Curb Robbery In Malete

The management of Kwara State University ( KWASU), Malete, has imposed restrictions on  movement and activities in Malete community to curb robbery attacks on students in the community.

“Motor bikes have been restricted from operating from 10 pm while all commercial activities and all movements are to cease at 11 p.m. All generator sets must be put off by 12 p.m., and no night parties would hold in the community henceforth,”the acting director, University Relations, Dr Saeedat Aliyu said in a statement.

She said that the resolution to impose restrictions was arrived at during the stakeholders’ meeting held on June 23, 2025,  at the instance of the KWASU’s management.

The meeting which had in attendance the vice chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh and his management team, the chairperson of Moro local government council and some councillors, the traditional institution in the community, security agencies, the alumni association, and the student union body, unanimously agreed that the restrictions be imposed to curb the repeated robbery in the community,” Aliyu added.

“Other measures include the  establishment of a joint security committee comprising of members from the university, Malete community, student union, and the security agencies, ensuring that all private hostels in Malete engage security for each hostel, and the employment of professional vigilantes to complement security officers in Malete.

“The vice chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, who emphasised the importance of security for all KWASU students, stated that all measures to arrest the insecurity affecting the students would be taken.

” While commending the Malete community and security agents for their support in arresting further attacks, Professor Jimoh urged everyone to be security conscious and report all suspicious movements to security agents,” she said.

In her remark, the chairperson of Moro local government area, Hajia Mariam Abdulwasiu, said the council would institute the legal process of a bylaw to legalise the restrictions agreed upon by the stakeholders.

She lauded the proactiveness of the management of KWASU  in arresting the concerning rate of robbery in Malete community.

She stated that the council would employ 10 more vigilantes who will be equipped with necessary gadgets to supplement existing security structure in Malete.

She said a transformer to improve public power would also be donated to the community by the council, while roads leading to the community would have gates erected by the council to check movement at night.

She also announced a donation of N1 million to the victims of the last robbery attack in Malete.
