Abia’s Proposed Multi-faceted $1.3bn Medical City Kicks-off

Official kick-off date of the multi-faceted Abia State proposed $1.3bn Medical City has been scheduled for early next month, according to the commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu.

Kanu announced this while briefing the media on the outcome of this week’s state executive council meeting presided over by the governor, Alex Otti in the state capital, Umuahia.

He said it is a collaborative project between the government and MKP International Holdings on a build, operate and transfer basis with the government, offering the land and other logistics

“It is the signature project that will ultimately reverse medical tourism, not just in the state or the Southeast, but in the whole of Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

“This flagship project when completed will transform the state into a major hub for advanced medical services.” the commissioner further stated

Kanu noted that the site occupies a land space of about 200 hectares, and the facility will feature a 1,000-bed capacity hospital, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

“It will also feature facilities for medical tourism, a five-star hotel complex and accommodation for both patients and their families”

The commissioner, who noted that the access road to the site is nearing completion, added that the project is to be delivered within 24 months from the date.
