The chairperson, Abia State chapter of League of Voters of Nigeria, Blessing Nwagba, has bemoaned what she described as socioeconomic and political relegation of women in the country.

Nwagba while speaking to LEADERSHIP Weekend at a town hall meeting organised by the league for Abia Central senatorial district in Umuahia said the advocacy tagged “Reserved Seats for Women in Legislature and Constitutional Reform”

was aimed at supporting the affirmative action towards correcting disparities in legislature, political integration and status against women’s representation in the National Assembly.

“Women have struggled over the years, and yet we’re not achieving anything. So, this reserved seat is to encourage women.

“It is an affirmative action to correct that wrong, that challenge, that difficulty women have been facing in trying to get themselves into offices.

“That will be an incredible increase and a big change in the status of women’s representation in the country, ” she added, while soliciting for support for the advocacy across every strata of society.

She said the league was also advocating for the passage of HAB 1349 Special Seat Bill to create special seats for women in the state and National Assembly.

She expressed delight that the Bill sponsored by the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu had gone through the second reading on the floor of House.
