In a landmark case, the Bauchi State Urban Water and Sewerage Corporation’s newly inaugurated mobile court sentenced Abdullahi Kabiru from Shingen Abbah, a community in the metropolis, to one a year imprisonment for water theft. The offender can also pay a fine of N200,000.

Justice Zainab, who presided over the mobile court, delivered the ruling as part of a broader effort to combat water-related crimes, including theft and illegal connections.

The court’s establishment marks a pivotal step towards sustainable water management in Bauchi State, ensuring equitable access to clean water for all residents.

Speaking on the development, the corporation’s spokesperson, Comrade Umar Jibrin, said the mobile court’s operation is in line with the government’s mission to safeguard water resources and promote responsible usage.

He said several other offenders have also been summoned for similar charges, emphasising the corporation’s zero-tolerance approach to water-related offences.

Jibirin explained that Kabiru, who accepted responsibility for his actions, serves as a cautionary tale for residents to comply with water regulations.

“This is not just about punishment; it’s about ensuring a sustainable water supply for every resident of Bauchi State,” he emphasised.

He urged residents to cooperate with the corporation and adhere to water laws to improve the quality of life for all. He added that the mobile court would continue to hear cases across the state, targeting water theft and illegal activities to protect this vital resource.
