In a grand celebration of triumph, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has generously gifted N5 million and a plot of land at the prestigious Kwara Smart City to each player of the Kwara United Football Club following their historic victory in the 2025 President Federation Cup.

The governor’s announcement came during a reception held in honour of the team, who defeated Abakaliki FC in a nail-biting penalty shootout after a goalless 90 minutes at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

“We are proud of you for making Kwara State shine on the national stage. This is the biggest trophy in Nigerian football, even gracing the sport before the League Cup was established,” Governor AbdulRazaq stated during the celebration.

In addition to applauding the senior team, the governor also recognised the efforts of the U-19 squad, who clinched the inaugural National Youth League title. The reception welcomed a jubilant crowd in Ilorin, as residents celebrated the team’s return with a motorcade from Eiyenkorin to the banquet hall in GRA.

The event gathered several dignitaries, including Hon Rukayat Shittu, chairman of the Kwara House of Assembly committee on sports; Hon Yusuf Abdulwaheed Gbenga, representing Shawo/Essa Constituency; and members of the Governor’s cabinet, including deputy chief of staff Princess Olubukola Babalola. Notable figures such as Coach Bola Magaji of the Kwara State Sports Commission and Chairman of Kwara United FC, Kumbi Titilope, also attended.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, the governor remarked on the transformation since taking office in 2019, noting, “When we came in, the club was plagued with debts, but today, thanks to your hard work and commitment, we celebrate this achievement together.”

Governor AbdulRazaq dedicated the trophy to the late Alhaji Yusuf Salami, who devoted his life to securing such accolades for the state without governmental support. He prayed for the repose of Salami’s soul, saying, “May Allah grant him Alijanna Fridaous.”

Coach Magaji and Kumbi Titiloye subsequently expressed their gratitude towards the governor for his considerable investment that has paved the way for ongoing success.
