Abia State Government has directed security agencies to immediately arrest and prosecute suspected cultists across the state.
The directive followed increasing cult-related activities in the state.
Commissioner for Information in the state, Okey Kanu stated this at a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s state executive council meeting in Umuahia, the state capital.
Kanu, who said the meeting was chaired by Governor Alex Otti, reiterated the government stand against any forms of crime and anti-social activities in the state.
”The state government has observed with dismay, the growing incidence of cult activities in the state.
”As a responsible government, this administration will spread no efforts in ensuring that the state is rid of criminal activities,” the commissioner said.
Kanu also announced a $5,000 support by Governor Otti for a 15-year old girl from the state, Grace Nkpa, who won a TechGirls 2025 contest to represent the state in the United States.
He disclosed further that the government had begun paying the owed salaries for workers of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, who were disengaged between 2018 and 2022, by the previous administration.
”So far, 249 of such staff have been paid,” Kanu said, stressing that the government was also making impacts at the Abia State College of Education Technical (ASCETA ), Arochukwu.
”Other projects such as the college library, school of vocational education block, college auditorium, students’ hostels, and school of technical education are all progressing very well,” he said.
