The Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Lydia Onuoha, has warned public primary and secondary school teachers in the state against dereliction and negligence of duty.

Onuoha, speaking to LEADERSHIP in Umuahia, said the warning comes in the wake of the state government’s massive investments in the education sector.

She expressed concern over the growing cases of irregular attendance and absenteeism among teachers despite the incentives and support being provided by the government.

According to her, such attitudes would henceforth attract disciplinary actions in line with Public Service Rules and the Teachers’ Code of Conduct. Sanctions may include queries, suspensions, or outright dismissal.

She announced that the board will roll out a statewide monitoring and enforcement strategy in collaboration with local government education authorities and school-based management committees.

Part of the initiative includes the introduction of biometric attendance systems in schools to monitor and track daily attendance and punctuality among teachers.

“The full weight of public service rules shall be invoked where necessary. The government will not hesitate to act in the interest of the children and the future of our state,” Onuoha stated.

She called on teachers to uphold the vision of a new Abia, where education is not only free and compulsory but also impactful, purposeful, and transformational.

“Teachers must reciprocate the goodwill of this government by being physically present, professionally prepared, and morally committed,” she said.

Onuoha commended Governor Alex Otti for repositioning the sector to meet 21st-century demands and urged parents, guardians, and stakeholders to partner with the board in ensuring quality education delivery.
