The House of Representatives and Parliament of Malawi have pledged to deepen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

They made the pledge when the deputy speaker of the Nigerian House, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, played host to a delegation from the Parliament of Malawi led by its first deputy speaker, Hon. Madalitso Kazombo.
Speaking during the courtesy visit, Kalu extolled the existing cooperation between the two countries’ legislative bodies, describing it as “healthy for Africa’s growth and development.”

The delegation is in Nigeria to participate in a five-day capacity-building workshop organised by Nigeria’s National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

Kalu emphasised that the visit would deepen legislative capacity and democracy, noting that the Malawian parliamentarians’ choice to study at NILDS underscores Nigeria’s growing reputation in democratic governance.

The deputy speaker also expressed delight that the Malawian parliamentarians chose Nigeria for the training, saying it reflects the country’s growing influence in democratic governance.

The visit chiefly aims to foster knowledge sharing, best practices, and collaboration between the legislative bodies of Nigeria and Malawi and further solidify their bilateral relations.

“It is with great pleasure that I warmly welcome you to the National Assembly of Nigeria, especially to the People’s House, the House of Representatives.

“Your visit to the National Assembly of Nigeria is a significant milestone in our shared journey towards strengthening parliamentary democracy and legislative capacity.

“I must say, I’m glad you chose Nigeria when you chose to study at NILDS. It means that you are impressed with what we have done with our experiences and the best practices with regards to strengthening our democracy here in Nigeria”, Kalu said.

The Malawian first deputy speaker said his country stood a chance of learning from Nigeria’s democratic experience, expressing optimism that the visit would yield fruitful outcomes for the respective parliaments.
