The Imo State government, in a renewed move to address growing concerns over uncontrolled cattle grazing in Owerri, has set July 24, 2025, as the deadline to end open grazing in the state capital.

This was made known by the commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr Anthony Mgbeahurike, during a meeting with cattle breeders and herders in Owerri.

Dr Mgbeahurike stressed that the Uzodimma administration is determined to maintain peaceful coexistence among all groups while safeguarding the socio-economic stability of the city.

He said, “The government has provided critical support to herders in the past, including free vaccination of cattle against anthrax. But we can no longer allow unchecked cattle roaming that disrupts daily life and threatens public order in Owerri.”

The commissioner also emphasised the need for mutual respect between herders and farmers.

“Herders must avoid the destruction of farmlands and, in cases of accidental damage, promptly compensate affected farmers,” he stated.

Anxious to guarantee effective communication and compliance, Dr Mgbeahurike officially recognised Alhaji Shuaibu as the new leader of cattle herders in the state.

The commissioner gave him the responsibility of informing fellow herders about the government’s new directive and ensuring compliance.

In his response, Alhaji Shuaibu expressed gratitude for the government’s response, support and apologised for disruptions caused through open grazing.

“We pledge our cooperation with the government and will work hard to comply with this directive. We commend Governor Uzodimma’s inclusive leadership and reaffirm our commitment to peace and clean environment in the state.
