Following the recent boat mishap that claimed 11 lives in Gbara Niger State, Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) has begun distribution of life jackets and money to communities living on the flood plains of the Hydro Power Dams.
The commission made a symbolic donation of N2.2 million cash and 200 life jackets to the communities and affected victims yesterday.
The managing director HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa who led some staff of the commission for a sympathy visit to the victims and people of Gbara in Mokwa and Lanchikagi in Lavun local government areas of the state said the commission was fulfilling its mandate for them.
He said the family of each deceased gets N100,000 while 37 of the survivors were given a donation of N30,000 each to help them.
He called on the state House of assembly to enact law to make use of life jackets in the state inland waterways compulsory even as he enjoined the people to always make use of the life jackets to curtail fatality in mishaps.
The district head of Gbara, Alhaji Mohammed Saba appreciated the kind gesture from the federal government and HYPPADEC for their quick response in providing life jackets and cash donations for the victims and called for more interventions.
