The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) and other etnic groups have expressed deep sorrow and thoughtful reflection on the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, former head of state and immediate past civilian president.

In a statement jointly issued yesterday in Abuja by key regional representatives – Afenifere (Oba Oladipo Olaitan), Middle Belt Forum (Dr. Bitrus Pogu), Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide (Senator John Azuta-Mbata), and PANDEF (Amb Godknows Igali), Buhari was remembered as a courageous soldier and patriot who played a vital role in safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity.

They highlighted Buhari’s rise through the military ranks as a disciplined and loyal officer, marked by unwavering dedication to national service. During his tenure as Military Head of State, he endeavoured to fight corruption and promote accountability and order within Nigeria’s public sector.

Though his military rule was brief, the forum noted, it left a lasting legacy defined by discipline and public morality, drawing both praise and criticism. After his overthrow in 1985, Nigeria experienced economic decline and widespread corruption, leading many to revisit the strict policies of his administration.

The statement also emphasized Buhari’s historic political comeback through democratic elections. After several attempts, he made history in 2015 as the first opposition candidate to unseat a sitting Nigerian president.

His eight years as a civilian president were marked by significant challenges, including economic struggles and security issues, alongside important reforms that helped shape Nigeria’s democratic progress.

The SMBLF honours Buhari’s steadfast commitment to democracy and affirms that his legacy will remain firmly etched in Nigerian history.

The forum extends sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all Nigerians, praying for his soul to find eternal peace with the Creator.
