NSE Confers Fellowship On 261 Engineers

Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has conferred Fellowship on 261 distinguished engineers with mandate to uphold ethical standards, promote Nigerian content, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The NSE president, Engr. Margaret Oguntala, at their induction in Abuja, said the unique occasion served as a platform to celebrate excellence, recognition of professional excellence, character, and commitment to the advancement of engineering in Nigeria.

“This honour comes with a profound obligation to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. Your actions and contributions will reflect not only your personal integrity but also the values of the Nigerian Society of Engineers,” she stated.

Oguntala emphasised that the fellowship is not just a title, but a trust.
She said the society reserves the right to withdraw the title from any member found guilty of misconduct or practices that tarnish the image of the profession.

“I must let you know, however, that this honour comes with a profound responsibility. It is imperative that you uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics and that you serve as exemplary role models to the next generation of Engineers.

Your actions, decisions and contributions, moving forward, will reflect not only your personal and professional integrity but also the reputation of the Nigerian Society of Engineers as a whole.

“Let it be known also that, as a society, we are firmly committed to upholding our profession’s integrity and ethical standards. This elevation in your professional career is an honour and trust that signifies excellence, responsibility and a lifelong commitment to ethical engineering practice.

Furthermore, you need to know that the Nigerian Society of Engineers reserves the right to withdraw its Fellowship from any recipient who is found culpable in conduct or practices that impugn the integrity of the Society or are at variance with the values of the profession. Therefore, I urge you to carry the banner of our Society with pride, dignity, and a deep sense of duty. “

She further encouraged the new fellows to be role models to younger engineers and to serve as champions of innovation, integrity, and national development.

She reiterated that the event presents a vital opportunity to raise the critical subject of our country’s development.

“Nigeria stands today at a defining juncture, one that demands the collaborative efforts of government and professionals, particularly the engineers, to drive sustainable progress.

“Our country has continued to face persistent challenges that require innovative, practical and technically sound solutions. Engineers, by the nature of our training and orientation, are uniquely equipped to provide such solutions. Our expertise is indispensable in supporting government initiatives to address these challenges, especially in the provision of critical infrastructure in key sectors such as energy, transportation, housing and public works.

She highlighted NSE’s collaborations with government agencies and private institutions to support public service delivery in sectors such as agriculture, vocational education, and digital transformation.

“To these ends, the Nigerian Society of Engineers has entered into strong collaborative agreements with key players in both the public and private sectors, viewing the aim to engender beneficial impacts to the Nigerian citizenry in areas such as agricultural entrepreneurship, vocational education, ICT/digital innovations, to name a few.”

Also speaking, the chairman of the Board of Fellows/College of Fellows of the NSE, Maliki Kamila, said 261 engineers who had distinguished themselves in the practice and promotion of engineering were conferred with the fellowship, the highest level any practising engineer in Nigeria can attain.

“These eminent professionals are commended for having scaled through the procedures for screening and assessment, as the process has remained very thorough but fair.

“This is why, even though the membership strength of the society is exceeding 82,000 members, only a few percentage who have consistently demonstrated leadership, commitment, and distinction in their field have been elevated to the fellowship grade,” Kamila stated.
