Former Minister of Transportation and prominent political ally of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Rotimi Amaechi, arrived in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, to pay his final respects as preparations for Buhari’s burial intensified.

Amaechi, who served as minister throughout Buhari’s two-term administration from 2015 to 2023, was seen dressed in full traditional regalia befitting his chieftaincy status as the Dan Amanar Daura, a revered title conferred on him by the Daura Emirate Council in 2022.

His arrival at the late former President’s private residence came hours before the expected landing of Buhari’s remains at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, ahead of his interment in Daura later on Tuesday.

Amaechi’s presence underscored his longstanding relationship with Buhari, which dated back to the early days of the All Progressives Congress (APC) formation and Buhari’s 2015 presidential bid.

In 2022, the Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness Umar Farouk Umar, conferred the title Dan Amanar Daura on Amaechi, meaning “the trusted son of Daura” in recognition of his loyalty and service to both Buhari and the people of Daura. The development at the time led to the speculations that Amaechi was Buhari’s preferred successor.

LEADERSHIP reports that security was visibly heightened around the residence of the late Buhari as dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers continued to arrive for the funeral of the late President, who died on Sunday in a hospital in London.
