In a bid to promote science education and practical learning among students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), philanthropist and youth corps member, Mrs. Marvelous Ruona Otaricho, has unveiled a fully-equipped science laboratory for Government Junior Secondary School, Life Camp.

The unveiling, which coincided with the global celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, was described as a transformative step towards enhancing science education and igniting innovation among the younger generation.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Otaricho emphasized the significance of the project, noting that it was inspired by her experience teaching basic science during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year.

“When I resumed as a corps member, I noticed many students lacked interest in science, largely because they had never experienced it practically. This laboratory project is my personal Community Development Service (CDS) initiative to change that narrative,” she said.

She stressed that the lab is more than just a room with equipment—it marks the beginning of a new journey of discovery for students.

“This space will allow students to move beyond textbooks and engage directly with scientific concepts through experimentation. Whether they dream of becoming doctors, engineers, researchers, or inventors, let this be where their dreams take shape,” Otaricho added.

She also acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the success of the project, thanking the school’s principal, fellow teachers, sponsors, and science department staff for their support.

“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the support of all our stakeholders. Thank you for believing in the power of education and in the potential of every child who walks through these doors,” she said.

Also speaking at the unveiling, Florence Wenegiemi, Director of Science, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, praised the initiative as a step in the right direction.

“This is a very laudable project. Science without practicals goes nowhere. This lab will take our students far and help prepare them as future leaders. Government alone cannot do everything we need contributions like this from our youth,” Wenegiemi stated.

She lauded Mrs. Otaricho’s efforts to mobilize partners and NGOs to not only build but also equip the laboratory, describing her as a role model for other young Nigerians.

“She went out of her way to gather resources and stakeholders. We are very proud of her, and we hope more youths will emulate her passion and dedication to community development,” she added.

“This is a commendable and visionary project. We will ensure that the facility is maintained and utilized to its fullest to inspire and educate our students,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Principal of GJSS Life Camp, Dr. Nwachukwu Francis, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for the project to thrive.

The unveiling concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony symbolizing the opening of minds and opportunities for generations of students to come.
