The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and other stakeholders have urged the graduating students of Government Science Secondary School (GSS), Maitama, to be ambassadors of the school and work towards shaping the future of Nigeria.
They spoke in Abuja yesterday at the 2025 graduation and speech/prize-giving ceremony for the graduating students.
The school’s Director and Principal, Mallam Usman Okuru, in his opening remarks, congratulated the Class of 2025 and reminded them that graduation was not the end, but a new beginning.
“Your education has prepared you not just to earn a living, but to live meaningfully, contribute positively, and live with integrity.“ He urged the students to uphold the school’s core values of honesty, diligence, and respect, stressing that “Success is not by luck. Success is intentional.”
Okuru also commended the teachers for their tireless efforts, describing them as the foundation of the students‘ success.
“You have planted seeds that will bear fruit beyond the walls of this school,” he said, while also thanking parents for their continued support and sacrifices.
Also speaking, the PTA Chairman, Hon. Chidi Opara Uwakwe, charged the graduates to stay focused, pursue excellence, and remember their roots. “You deserve to be congratulated. You have completed six years of primary and six years of secondary and are headed for the next stage. That is no small feat,” he said.
He praised the school’s performance in national and international competitions, including a robotics contest where GSS Maitama students came second out of 55 countries in South Africa.
According to him, the students’ academic and extracurricular accomplishments are proof of the school’s growing reputation. “You have made us proud, from robotic engineering to other science competitions where you stood out nationally and globally,” he said.
On his part, Dr. Olobashola Kolawole, Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Utako, lauded the teachers and the PTA for their commitment to academic excellence.
He noted that the students had genuinely earned their graduation, recounting how a grateful parent once donated N1 million to the school in appreciation of a child‘s improvement. “These children are not graduating before their time. They merit this celebration.“
One of the special guests, Dr. Jubrin Mustapha, encouraged the graduating class to be symbols of good conduct in society. “Be good ambassadors of your school and strive to achieve great heights.“
The ceremony ended with the presentation of awards to outstanding students and teachers.
