Aboze Brain John, a rising star in Nigeria’s artificial intelligence landscape, has been awarded the AIESEC Nigeria Leadership Award for 2023. AIESEC, a global organization dedicated to empowering young people to make a positive social impact, has a network of approximately 84,000 members in over 100+ countries. The award recognizes Brain’s continuous efforts in putting Nigeria on the global map through his groundbreaking AI innovations and research.
Brain’s work has been particularly impactful in the healthcare sector. He co-authored a significant research paper on the application of mathematical modeling to manage the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. This paper, titled “SARS-CoV2: Application of Mathematical modelling in managing the pandemic in Nigeria,” utilized the CHIME (COVID-19 Hospital Impact Model for Epidemics) model to forecast the progression of the outbreak and provide insights for hospital capacity planning. His research aimed to help authorities make informed decisions on countermeasures to slow down viral transmission and prepare the healthcare system for the challenges of the pandemic.
In another vital contribution during the COVID-19 crisis, Brain wrote a paper on “Optimizing Health Facilities Allocation for COVID-19 Management Using Social Vulnerability Index and Spatial Data Analysis.” This work was designed to help hospitals identify vulnerable areas in the country and prepare accordingly.
Beyond his academic contributions, Brain has been at the forefront of practical, innovative solutions. He developed a drone project to detect facemasks, a solution he urged airports to adopt. This project even led to a conversation with Google Expert Laurence Moroney. His expertise has also been recognized by his inclusion as a knowledge volunteer for Data Science Nigeria, where he worked alongside top AI experts like Sara Hooker and Dr. Stephen Odaibo, who were thought leaders during this time.
In a post-interview session after receiving the award, Brain humbly remarked, “It’s possible to do big things for a small place,” a testament to his dedication to making a significant impact from his home country. Aboze Brain John’s achievements serve as an inspiration for many young innovators in Nigeria and across Africa.
