The Senate on Wednesday celebrated the Super Falcons for their thrilling semifinal triumph over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana at the ongoing 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The victory has now sent the team into the final and within touching distance of a record-extending 10th continental crown.

During plenary, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), led the commendation, lauding the team’s resilience, tactical discipline, and unifying effect on the nation.

“These brilliant girls have brought joy and unity to Nigerians at a time when the nation mourns the loss of great icons including General Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Dantata, and Oba Adetona,” Ningi said. “I urge all Nigerians to rally behind the Super Falcons with prayers as they chase this historic 10th title—an achievement unmatched in African women’s football.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio echoed the sentiments, admitting to being emotionally invested in the match despite not being an avid football fan.

“I rarely watch football, but I was glued to the screen. That golden goal was guided by angels,” Akpabio remarked, prompting laughter from lawmakers. “God is clearly with the Falcons.”

In a jovial moment, Akpabio playfully warned Senator Ningi not to veer into partisan football banter.

“Don’t bring up Barau FC too much, or I will remind you of how Godswill FC humbled Gateway United 3-0 last week,” he joked, lightening the atmosphere further.

The Senate President went on to suggest that Senator Ningi be appointed to lead Nigeria’s official delegation to the WAFCON final in Morocco, a proposal met with loud applause across the chamber.
