Globacom’s social responsibility arm, Glo Foundation has graduated the first participants in its Skillbridge training programme in Lagos.

The programme is Glo Foundation’s skill acquisition initiative, which empowers Nigerians with creative-technical skills to broaden their horizons and create other streams of income.

The graduation cohort, drawn from the crop of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) street sweepers were given the opportunity to partake in life-transforming trainings bankrolled by the foundation.

Welcoming guests and the beneficiaries last Thursday, the head of CSR at Globacom, Jumobi Mofe-Damijo, observed that the hard work and dedication of the participants to the training had been truly inspiring.

“They have provided strong feedback to us that investing in our community and creating opportunities for the staff of LAWMA is a great way to give back to society,” Mofe-Damijo said.

She stated that “completing this creative-technical skills training was a significant milestone.”
Mofe-Damijo said, “We know that this training has given you the tools and knowledge to succeed, and we are excitedly looking forward to seeing what you accomplish beyond today to open more opportunities for yourselves to have more sources of income to cater for yourselves and your loved ones.”

The managing director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who was represented by the agency’s executive director of finance, Mr Kunle Adebiyi, described Globacom’s project to train agency staff as commendable and an excellent way of helping the beneficiaries open up new sources of income.

The beneficiaries showcased the skills that they learnt from the training in various areas, including digital skills, baking, and fashion. One of those who trained in digital skills made a presentation on using Canva, while another presented on AI.

Some participants were recognised and honoured for their outstanding performance during the training. Mrs Obadina Omowunmi Sarah was recognised for being exceptional in baking. She disclosed that she had longed for a chance to earn extra income and commended Globacom for providing the opportunity.

Damilola Olowolafe was recognised for being outstanding in fashion, while Endurance Francis allowed her daughter, Udoh Blessing, to take her slot. Blessing, who had always wished for an opportunity for digital skills training, was overjoyed when she got the slot for her mother. “What I have learnt, if I don’t make use of it, even God will be angry with me”, she said.
