The Nigerian Senate has adjourned plenary for lawmakers to proceed on annual recess, fixing September 23, 2025 for Senators’ resumption.

The resolution of the Senate followed the adoption of a motion for the annual recess moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on Thursday, in Abuja.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasised that the recess aligns with the legislative calendar and mirrors the earlier adjournment of the House of Representatives.

Akpabio explained that the 10th National Assembly, inaugurated on June 13, had commenced a new legislative calendar in June, saying the break is consistent with standard legislative timelines.

He noted that the recess affects only plenary sessions, while committee activities will continue.

“We are moving from plenary for the next few weeks, but you are not stopping your legislative functions, because that’s what your people elected you to do,” Akpabio said.

He directed all relevant committees, including those on diaspora affairs, reparations, and interior matters to use the recess period to intensify their oversight functions.

Akpabio specifically encouraged visits to correctional facilities and inspections of federal projects across the country.

“This is the best time for you to undertake visits to prisons and all that. Do all your reports and make them available as soon as we come back,” he charged the lawmakers.

The Senate President assured that a special day would be set aside after resumption to consider all submitted committee reports.

He also extended warm wishes for a safe and restful break to all senators, praying for their health and safety.

On a solemn note, Akpabio informed the chamber of the passing of Professor Janet Plang, the wife of Senator Diket Plang.

He called on all senators to assemble in Abuja on Friday to travel together to Plateau State for her burial.

Earlier, the Senate Leader expressed appreciation, on behalf of the leadership, for the dedication of senators throughout the legislative session.

He then moved a motion to defer all other items on Thursday’s Order Paper until the next legislative day.

With that, the Red Chamber officially concluded its session ahead of the September resumption.
