At just 10, Wilson Onasanya has made history, authoring a book on mathematics, a subject many fear. The Primary Five pupil and soon-to-be secondary school student unveiled his work in Kwara State to wide acclaim. In this interview with ABDULLAHI OLESIN, the young prodigy shares what inspired him and what comes next.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Wilson Onasanya, and I’m 10 years old. I’m currently in Primary 5 at Lightway Schools in Ilorin, Kwara State. I live with my family, who are very supportive of my learning journey. I enjoy reading, solving mathematics problems, and playing educational games. I’m a naturally curious and determined learner, and I love discovering new things every day , especially when it challenges me to think.
What inspired you to write a book on Mathematics at such a young age?
The idea to write “My Adventure with Numbers” came from my love for Mathematics and my desire to help other children see that Maths doesn’t have to be scary or difficult. My biggest inspiration was my mum. She used to teach me late at night and always made Maths fun and easy to understand. As I improved, I realised there were many children struggling with the subject. I wanted to use my own journey to encourage them. I mean, to show them that they can overcome their fear of numbers too. Writing a book felt like the best way to share that message with as many people as possible.
What do you hope to become in the future?
I hope to become a Mathematician and maybe even a Scientist. I want to discover new things, solve real-world problems, and help others learn and enjoy Mathematics. I also dream of becoming a teacher or a Professor one day, so I can make Maths fun and exciting for children, just like my mum and teachers did for me.
Who supported and encouraged you to write this book?
My biggest encouragement came from my mum. She spent many nights teaching me and helping me understand Mathematics in a fun and easy way. She was the first person who believed I could turn my journey into a book. My teachers at School also supported me with their kind words and constant encouragement. They always praised my effort and pushed me to do better. My dad was another great cheerleader; he made sure I had everything I needed and always reminded me to stay focused. I’m very grateful to all of them for believing in me.
How did you feel the moment you saw your book printed for the first time?
Wow! I was so excited . I couldn’t believe it! Holding my book in my hands felt like a dream come true. I kept flipping through the pages and smiling. It made me feel proud, like all the hard work really paid off. I even slept with the book beside my pillow that night.
What challenges did you face while writing the book, and how did you overcome them?
Sometimes I got tired or felt stuck, especially when I didn’t know how to explain something clearly. But my mum always encouraged me to take a short break, pray, and try again. Also, balancing my homework and writing was not easy, but I made a timetable that helped me stay organised. I just kept telling myself, “Don’t give up, Wilson”
How did it feel to hear your teachers and parents speak so proudly about you at the book launch?
I felt so, so happy like I was flying inside. Hearing my school proprietor and my parents talk about me with so much pride made me smile a lot. It made me feel like all the late nights and hard work were worth it. I didn’t even know they would say such big things! It also made me want to do even more and keep making them proud.
What advice would you give to other children who want to do something big like you?
I’d say, don’t be afraid to try! You don’t have to wait until you’re grown up to do something amazing. If you have a dream, talk to your parents or teachers, and start working on it little by little. Believe in yourself, stay focused, and never stop learning. You can do it!
