Cross River Govt Backs SUBEB, Pledges More Investment In Basic Education

Cross River State government has pledged increased backing for the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) with a renewed promise to invest more in basic education.

The commissioner for Education, Prof. Stephen Odey, made the pledge on Monday in Calabar during a courtesy visit by the management team of CR-SUBEB to the Ministry of Education.

Odey averred that Otu’s administration remains committed to strengthening the foundation of learning in public primary schools and will sustain the existing synergy between the Ministry and SUBEB to achieve that goal.

The visit was led by the executive chairman of CR-SUBEB, Mrs Fidelia Okpo Ene.

She briefed the commissioner on critical areas that require urgent intervention to improve the Board’s operations and statewide service delivery.

Lauding the board for its proactive engagement, Odey described it as a welcome development toward resolving outstanding issues and assured the delegation that all matters raised would be tabled before Governor Bassey Otu for necessary action and approvals.

Ene commended the commissioner for his leadership and support. “We are confident that with your continued guidance and the support of the state government, the concerns we have raised will be addressed,” she said.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of CR-SUBEB, Dr Mrs. Mary Theresa Ebe, appreciated the Commissioner’s open-door policy.  She expressed optimism that “the necessary approvals will be secured in due course” to enable SUBEB to deliver more effectively on its mandate.

With the government’s renewed pledge, stakeholders expect improved funding, infrastructure, and learning outcomes in Cross River’s public primary schools in the coming months.
