The Jigawa Unified New Improvement Teaching and Education (Jigawa-UNITE) project has called on traditional rulers in the state to support its initiative to enhance teaching and learning at the basic education level.

Mr Olusanya Omojola, acting managing director of Jigawa-UNITE, made the appeal during a tour of the five emirates’ palaces in the state.

He informed the emirs that the project would be implemented in collaboration with a United Kingdom-based firm.

He explained that the initiative seeks to improve teaching and learning in basic schools for strengthening foundational skills.

Mr Omojola added that the new initiative would enhance parental and community participation in school monitoring while also building teachers’ capacity.

“Teachers’ skills will be improved in modern teaching methods, including the use of digital and locally available learning materials, as well as fostering a conducive learning environment in schools.”

“Schools are sanctuaries for training and producing future leaders. Therefore, traditional institutions and the general public have a significant role in ensuring that effective teaching and learning occur.”

“We are optimistic that with the support of traditional institutions, this project will succeed. We hope it will receive all necessary royal support and blessings,” Mr Omojola stated.

In their responses, the Emirs of Hadejia, Gumel, Kazaure, Dutse, and Ringim expressed their delight with the initiative and described it as a realistic strategy for improving foundational skills.
They emphasised that foundational skills are crucial for academic success, noting that higher and advanced education cannot be achieved without a solid basic education.

The emirs assured their full support at all levels to address learning poverty in the state and reduce the high rate of out-of-school children
