Crime rate has drastically reduced in Akwa Ibom State in the last six months, a survey by the police has revealed.

The feat followed intensified offensives by operatives against criminal elements in the 31 local government areas leading to the conviction of 23 culprits.

Disclosing the record to journalists yesterday at the state headquarters, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, attributed the success to proactive intelligence-led policing by the commissioner of police (CP), Baba Azare.

“The police command under the leadership of the CP Baba Azare has secured 23 convictions for various criminal offences between January and July 2025, signaling remarkable progress in the fight against crime across the State.

“The convictions, ranging from a minimum of two weeks to three years imprisonment were for offences such as stealing, assault, burglary, felony, and escape from lawful custody. These outcomes reflect the Command’s intensified efforts in crime prevention, professional investigation, and effective prosecution.

“All legal proceedings followed due process.

Arrests, investigations, and trials were executed in line with constitutional provisions and best practices in law enforcement.

“The positive results of the Command’s approach are being felt across major towns including Uyo, Ikot Ekpene, Oron, and Eket, where residents have reported a significant decline in burglary, theft, and violent crimes. Public sentiments reflect a growing sense of security and confidence in the Police Force,” she explained.

Since assuming office in late 2024, the Police Public Relations noted that CP Azare has introduced several reforms, including “enhanced community policing, rapid response mechanisms, professional retraining of officers, direct and supervision of field operations.”
