The Senate of the Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all socio-academic activities, including the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations over unresolved administrative matters between the staff unions and the state government.
In a statement on Saturday, August 2, 2025 by the Deputy Registrar who is also the Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the decision was reached during a virtual Senate meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Thomas-Onashile said the meeting reviewed developments following the industrial action declared on Thursday, July 31, by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Staff Unions.
The JAC comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
Briefing members of the Senate, LASU Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello explained that the University’s management had been engaging with relevant authorities to find a peaceful resolution to the development.
He noted that a high-level meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, involving representatives of the unions, university management, and state ministries.
The VC said the parties agreed to reconvene on Thursday, August 7, for further consultations.
Following deliberations, the Senate resolved to postpone the semester examinations, originally scheduled to start on Monday, August 4, and suspend all academic and non-academic activities until further notice.
The Senate also directed all students residing in hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses to vacate the facilities by 6a.m. on Monday, August 4.
Students and other members of the University community have been advised to remain calm and law-abiding while consultations continue.
