The Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Programme (IBSDLEIP), supported by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the African Development Bank (AfDB), has presented trade starter packs and certificates to 800 beneficiaries in Bauchi State under its economic recovery component.
The empowerment initiative aims to improve livelihoods and promote self-reliance through skills acquisition and entrepreneurial support.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony held at Command Guest House, Bauchi, on Saturday, the state’s programme coordinator, Engr Garba Magaji, said the intervention is part of ongoing efforts to fight poverty and improve the quality of life for residents.
He acknowledged the critical support of the AfDB and the Federal Ministry of Finance, praising their resources, expertise, and guidance throughout the programme’s implementa.
He also lauded the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment’s Skills Upgrading and Vocational Training Centre in Bauchi for delivering intensive, certified training in 22 trades to the 800 beneficiaries.
The trades covered include aluminum fabrication, barbing, carpentry, catering, computer operations and maintenance, cosmetology, electrical and solar installation, embroidery, photography and video production, GSM repairs, hairdressing, knitting, shoe and bag making, vehicle maintenance, panel beating, plumbing, soap and candle making, tailoring, vulcanising, beautification, welding and fabrication.
Magaji encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace the tools and knowledge they have gained, stating “Skills have been transferred, confidence is being restored, and opportunities are opening up where there were none.”
Also, Governor Bala Mohammed described the programme as a strategic response to pressing challenges such as youth unemployment.
He said the initiative is about empowerment, equipping the youth to move from dependency to economic contribution and self-reliance.
Represented by the chief of staff, Government House, Aminu Hassan Gamawa, he stressed that the programme is non-partisan and designed to foster inclusive development.
He assured that the selection of the 800 beneficiaries across all 20 local government areas of the state was done transparently and free from political bias.
The governor warned beneficiaries against selling the starter packs, urging them to use the equipment to build sustainable businesses and contribute to the state’s economy.
He further advised them to register their businesses and seek professional mentorship to grow in the trade and enterprise space.
Some beneficiaries, including Fatima Adamu, Aminu Gambo, Hamisu Auwal, and Farida Yakubu, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to utilise the equipment to improve their economic status and support their families.
