Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have raided the Green Legacy Hotel, located within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, arresting several youths suspected to be internet fraudsters.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Sunday during a pool party at the hotel.
Eyewitnesses said the scene turned chaotic as guests scrambled for safety when gunshots were heard.
A viral video of the raid showed panic at the premises, with some attendees fleeing the pool area.
Sources said EFCC operatives seized over 20 luxury cars and other valuable items during the operation, which was allegedly conducted by officials from the commission’s Lagos Directorate.
The raid came just five days after EFCC’s Ibadan Zonal Directorate arrested a suspected internet fraudster in possession of two locally-made pistols during a similar operation at K-Hotel, Itori, Ewekoro area of Ogun State. That operation, carried out last Wednesday, led to the arrest of 55 suspects.
An X user, A. Ayomide, shared a personal account of Sunday’s incident, writing, “Literally left my house past midnight to go to OOPL, got there and the crowd was too much. I don’t like the settings, my guy doesn’t like the settings, so we were just at the car park. Left around 1:30, 20 minutes later I get home and I’m getting calls that EFCC is raiding OOPL.”
The Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, Vitalis Ortese, confirmed the raid but withheld details.
“Yes, they did. There was an incident this morning. We will find out and we will let you know,” he told our correspondent.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos Zonal Command of EFCC, Ayo Oyewole, said he was not aware of the operation but promised to provide further information.
Similarly, the commission’s national spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said he would confirm and revert.
