Tension has again gripped the Yelwata community in Benue State after gunmen reportedly attacked the residents of the community in the early hours of Monday.

Witnesses reported that the recent attack sparked a protest among women, who marched through the streets calling for the soldiers in the area to return to their barracks.

The upset residents also requested their immediate relocation to Makurdi, the state capital, asserting they no longer feel safe in their community.

“They should take us to Makurdi because the government cannot protect us,” one protester said.

The attack came barely two months after gunmen, believed to be herders, on June 13, stormed the community and killed an estimated 200 people, including internally displaced persons, with many burned alive during a night of brutal violence.
