The event, which was held at Dukku water spot on the outskirts of Birnin Kebbi metropolis, was coordinated by NEMA and the Kebbi State government.

The exercise is also a week-long engagement by the agency. Kebbi State governor Nasir Idris and representatives of Sokoto, Niger, and Zamfara states served as executive observers.

At the closing ceremony of the exercise, the director general of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, said it was the last of a week-long engagement by the agency with stakeholders that included training lectures and community interactions on flood alerts.

She added that the SIMEX exercise was conducted to expose gaps and strengthen the agency’s collaboration.

According to her, NiMet and NIHSA have shown that Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger and Kwara were identified as flood-prone states in the northwest and North Central regions in the 2025 seasonal climate predictions.

Umar, however, noted that flooding remained one of the most recurrent and devastating natural disasters in Nigeria, with the five states mentioned as the most affected.

At the session’s conclusion, the DG presented jacket Kits to Caneo riders in Kebbi State and other participants.

Kebbi State governor Nasir Idris, represented by the commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Empowerment, Muhammed Hamidu Jarkuka, commended NEMA for organising such an important and timely stimulation exercise against flooding.

He disclosed that the government has made great progress in taking measures to prevent disasters, particularly flooding in Kebbi State.
