How to get Slovenian citizenship through repatriation. Is Slovenian citizenship scam?

Many individuals of Slovenian origin may qualify for citizenship by repatriation. This pathway is based not on residence or integration, but on verified bloodline. It offers the chance to reconnect with national roots and reclaim a Slovenian passport.

However, eligibility depends on specific legal criteria. Ancestral ties alone are not enough. Applicants must meet documentary and procedural requirements that vary by case and generation.

For those who qualify, the reward is substantial – full rights and access to an EU passport. But the path to citizenship is far from simple. The following sections explain what you need to know before submitting your application.

Who qualifies for Slovenian citizenship by repatriation

The legal foundation for repatriation is defined in the Article 12(1) of the Citizenship Act of the Republic of Slovenia, also known as “Zakon o državljanstvu Republike Slovenije”. This pathway applies to individuals with proven ancestral ties to former nationals of the state up to the fourth generation (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren). Family ties must be continuous and documented. Collateral relatives and adopted children do not qualify for repatriation.

This mechanism is designed specifically for people of Slovenian origin whose families emigrated generations ago. It applies regardless of the applicant’s current passport, country of residence or language ability.

Acquiring citizenship by repatriation under this framework is not time limited.

What kind of documentation is accepted

The outcome of a citizenship claim by repatriation depends on the documentary evidence provided. Authorities require official records confirming both identity and ancestral connection. These materials have to be suitable for use in administrative proceedings.

Required documentation includes:

  • National ID card
  • International passport
  • Birth certificate or baptismal record
  • Archival extracts from civil or church registers
  • Two identical photographs (3.5 × 4.5 cm)
  • Completed citizenship application
  • Language certificate
  • Written autobiography, dated and signed
  • Power of attorney, if submitted through a representative
  • Proof of residence in the country for at least 1 year (unless the applicant has a reason for disregarding this requirement)

Each item must comply with the format required by the competent Slovenian authority. Proper documentation is the foundation of a successful application. To apply for citizenship through repatriation, the file has to be both complete and verifiable.

What steps are required to obtain citizenship

Understanding how to get Slovenian citizenship involves navigating each step precisely and in accordance with statutory requirements.

But repatriation also offers a clear advantage: in justified cases, there is no obligation to renounce an existing passport. This simplifies the repatriation process and reduces bureaucratic obstacles during migration. So, in general, to apply for citizenship, you need to go through the following steps:

  • Verifying eligibility and collecting ancestry records

Proof of Slovenian repatriation must be based on official records confirming direct lineage. If such documents are unavailable within the family, certified copies may be obtained from matični urad or church archives in Slovenia. Requests require accurate data on the ancestor’s identity and place of registration.

  • Preparing and legalizing the documents

Cross-border legal cooperation determines the accepted form of foreign entries. Inconsistencies in personal data, especially transliteration errors, often require formal correction before submission. Translations must comply with Slovenian procedural law and be attached in certified form.

  • Submitting the application to Slovenian authorities

Cases based on Slovenian repatriation are processed exclusively by the Upravna Enota at the place of origin of the ancestor. If the citizenship request is filed abroad, the consulate forwards the complete file to Ljubljana for review. The person applying must remain available for contact; unresolved issues may lead to suspension or delay in the issuance of the passport.

  • Waiting for a decision and receiving the passport

Slovenian citizenship takes legal effect only after the oath is taken in Ljubljana before an authorized officer. Attendance is mandatory and must occur within the time limit set in the approval decision. In straightforward cases, Slovenian citizenship in 8 months is achievable; the passport can then be issued via consulate or local administrative unit (Upravna Enota).

Avoiding Slovenian citizenship fraud: what real legal assistance looks like

While legitimate legal advisors work within the framework of national law, many unregistered operators use the growing interest in ancestry to mislead clients. Recognizing Slovenian citizenship fraud is not always easy, as those often mimic the surface of a professional service.

But there are certain patterns that reveal when an offer is not legitimate. Below are key warning signs that may indicate a Slovenian citizenship scam:

  • Frequent “unforeseen” expenses. Costs keep increasing without prior notice or explanation.
  • Claims that you can “buy Slovenian citizenship”. Any offer to obtain passport solely through payment is illegal and should be treated with caution.
  • No contract or proof of legal license. Genuine professionals operate under a legal mandate and provide written agreements outlining terms and fees.
  • Lack of transparency on case handling. If the process, timeline, or document submission is unclear, the service is likely not compliant with Slovenian law.

Legitimate legal assistance always respects the limits of the law. To avoid falling victim to a scam, verify credentials, demand clarity, and never engage with anyone offering to buy the status. Slovenian citizenship by repatriation is a legal right, but only when pursued lawfully.
