The House of Representatives has described as baseless and highly irresponsible, claims by the member representing Hadejia, Auyo, Kafin Hausa Federal Constituency of Jigawa State in the House, Ibrahim Usman Auyo, that lawmakers were receiving between N1 million and N3 million before accepting to present motions, bills, or petitions on behalf of Nigerians during plenary sessions.

Hon. Auyo made the revelation in a viral video in which he spoke in an interview in Hausa language while angrily reacting to criticism of his performance by his constituents.

He denied claims that other lawmakers sponsored motions in the interest of their people but insisted that legislative processes at the National Assembly were financially driven as those who regularly sponsor Motions, Bills and Petitions were allegedly paid to do so.

“Since I went to the National Assembly, it’s not true that anyone wrote a motion for their need or others to be presented before the House by me. It’s all false and rumours. And if at all there is, anyone can come out to challenge me,” the lawmaker said.

But, the deputy House spokesperson, Hon. Phillip Agbese, dismissed the allegations, saying that the claim that lawmakers received fees to present motions, bills, or petitions during plenary sessions was a reckless misrepresentation of the legislative process.

Agbese said Auyo will be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges to further explain his position.

“Thank you for your message regarding the allegations by Hon. Ibrahim Usman Auyo. I find these claims baseless and deeply irresponsible. Suggesting that lawmakers received fees to present motions, bills, or petitions during plenary sessions is a reckless misrepresentation of the legislative process.

“The House operates under the Constitution and its Standing Orders, ensuring transparency and equal access for all members to represent their constituents without financial barriers. Hon. Auyo’s statements, likely stemming from illiteracy or ignorance, do not reflect the reality of our legislative practices.

“Under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, GCON, the House maintains strict internal checks and balances that make it impossible for any committee to compromise our shared values as a parliament. To address this matter, Hon. Auyo will be referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges to further explain his position,” Agbese stated.
