By-elections: Voters Troop Out To Exercise Franchise In Kano

Voters turned out in their numbers on Saturday, August 16, 2025, to participate in the ongoing rerun election for the Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency of Kano State.

LEADERSHIP had reported that voting was disrupted during the 2023 general as well as supplementary elections in this area, resulting in a court order for rerun in the 10 affected polling units.

The units consist about 5,200 voters which was being contested between the All Progress Party (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

As at 8a.m when journalists visited polling units within Ghari local government areas, residents were seen on the queue waiting to exercise their civi rights.

Security personnel comprising of the Nigerian Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were stationed at the various polling units.

A voter identified as Abubakar Aliyu who spoke to journalists, commended the election process, confirming that voting commenced between 8 and 9 a.m.

Another voter, Mairo Magaji from Yankefi ward said the election was conducted peacefully, with a high turnout of women, noting that she spent about 20 minutes on the queue.

For his part, Nasiru Sale who voted at the Mata Fada ward also commended the peaceful conduct of the election.

However, for the Shanono/Bagwai constituency by-elections, voting has ended with counting ongoing in some polling units, while the process was disrupted in some areas by political thugs.

The rerun election was to fill the vacant position in the Kano State House of Assembly following the death of Halilu Kundila on April, 2024.
