The English Football League (EFL) has confirmed that Grimsby Town have been fined £20,000 after fielding an ineligible player during their shock Carabao Cup second-round victory over Manchester United last weekend.

According to the EFL, Grimsby registered the player at 12:01 pm on matchday, just one minute past the 12 pm deadline, making him ineligible for selection.

Despite their historic win at Old Trafford, the club has now been punished for the administrative error, though the result of the fixture will stand.

The sanction serves as a stern reminder to clubs about strict compliance with player registration rules in domestic competitions.
