Niger Delta Group Urges Reforms In NNPCL

A Niger Delta social ethnic group, known as the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Council (NDENYC), has called for a major reform at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) which would bring fortune to Nigeria.

The group, which made the call in Abuja on Tuesday, condemned the incessant distractions surrounding the leadership of the NNPCL, noting that such distractions are affecting the country’s major oil company.

Briefing journalists in Abuja yesterday, president general of the group, Terry Obieh charged the NNPC Ltd. “to stand as a model of transparency, accountability, efficiency, and civic engagement because  those values remain essential elements in restoring public trust and safeguarding the company as Nigeria’s greatest national asset. ”

The Niger Delta group also condemned the recent protest demanding the resignation of the group chief executive officer (GCEO), Mr. Bashir Ojulari, over alleged corruption and mismanagement, noting that these demands do not ” in any way represent the interest of Niger Delta youths, industry groups and host communities.”

Obieh further said “Since taking the helm in April 2025, Ojulari has overseen sweeping reforms aimed at restoring transparency, boosting oil production, and repositioning the national oil company for global competitiveness.

Within his first 100 days, Ojulari launched initiatives targeting some of the sector’s most persistent challenges. He improved collaboration with upstream partners and enhanced security measures along pipelines, which raised daily crude oil output from 1.2 million barrels to 1.8 million barrels by August 2025.

“He brought transparency to the fore. NNPC resumed publishing its monthly financial and operational reports for the first time in three years. These efforts have coincided with early successes in reviving domestic refineries in Warri and Port Harcourt, contributing to a more stable fuel supply and eased pressure at the pumps.

“Ojulari’s bold reform agenda, which includes full implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), has encountered pushback from entrenched interests. Efforts to restructure legacy contracts and tighten financial oversight have prompted misinformation campaigns, including recent false claims of his resignation.”
