At just 14 years old, Stephanie Ogechukwu Onusiriuka is emerging as a potential trailblazer for Nigerian gymnastics, with hopes of securing the nation’s first-ever Olympic medal in the sport.

The teenage prodigy showcased her remarkable talent at the recently concluded National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, where she dominated the gymnastics events, solidifying her status as a rising star. Competing on behalf of Lagos State, Onusiriuka exhibited poise, power, and precision, clinching gold medals in the beam, vault, and the prestigious all-round category. In addition, she secured two silver medals in the floor exercise and team event, culminating in a spectacular performance.

This latest achievement builds on an impressive track record. At the 2023 Games, she captivated audiences with four gold medals, swiftly becoming the face of gymnastics in Nigeria. The spotlight remained firmly on her this year in Asaba, and she did not disappoint.

However, Stephanie’s ambitions extend far beyond domestic competitions. With training experience in London at top-tier facilities, she is now setting her sights on competing in the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and ultimately, the Olympics.

“My dream is to represent Nigeria at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics,” she stated after her recent triumph.

“I am grateful to my parents and everyone who has supported me so far, but I need access to high-quality training facilities to compete with the best in the world without feeling intimidated. Therefore, I am appealing for support from the private sector. I believe I can be the first gymnast to win an Olympic medal for Nigeria if I am provided with the right opportunities.”

Stephanie’s plea underscores a broader need for investment in grassroots sports development, particularly in disciplines beyond football and athletics, where Nigeria has traditionally focused its resources. With adequate support, her talent, determination, and vision could elevate Nigeria onto the global gymnastics stage and inspire a new generation of athletes.
