Former President Goodluck Jonathan held a closed-door meeting with former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday in Abuja.

The former LP candidate, who disclosed the meeting on his X handle, said it was in the nation’s interest and added that it was fruitful.

Jonathan and Obi are being wooed by leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to return to the former ruling party. The intention is to make one emerge as a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

While former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, described Jonathan as the party’s best bet, former Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana, said the party is trying to get Obi to return.

The Senate minority leader, Sen Abba Moro, has also confirmed that PDP, which just zoned the party’s presidential ticket to the South, said the party is seeking to get Jonathan and Obi back to the party.

However, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, and his group have warned against moves to bring Jonathan and Obi to the PDP. Wike’s camp pledged to work for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Jonathan, the PDP’s candidate in 2015 when it lost power to the APC, distanced himself from the party following its protracted post-election period.

On the other hand, Obi dumped the PDP shortly before the party’s presidential primary election in 2022 because the party failed to zone its ticket to the South. He was the PDP’s vice presidential candidate in the 2019 election.

Obi wrote on his X handle, disclosing the meeting, “Today in Abuja, I met with my dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan @GEJonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation.”
