The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has conferred the prestigious fellowship of the professional body on the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, CFR.

Senator Barau, an accountant by profession, received the designation of Fellow Certified National Accountant (FCNA) during the Association’s 30th Annual National Conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

FCNA is the highest professional title awarded by ANAN to members who have demonstrated excellence and commitment to accountancy.

ANAN’s president and council chairman, Chief (Hajia) Zuwairatu Kishimi, FCNA, administered the oath of allegiance and described Senator Barau as a worthy ambassador of the profession and the association.

“By virtue of the powers conferred on me as the President and Chairman of the Council of this great association—the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN)—by Act 76 of 1993 (CAP A26, LFN 2004), I hereby admit you into the fellowship of the association. With this, you may now add FCNA to your name. We are proud of you, and we celebrate you,” she declared, to thunderous applause from the audience.

The ANAN President also presented Senator Barau with an award in recognition of his role as chairman of the association’s national conference.

Dignitaries at the occasion paid glowing tributes to Senator Barau, including the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamsudeen Ogunjimi, who represented President Bola Tinubu.

ANAN’s chairman of the conferences, seminars, and workshops committee, Malam Adamu Abubakar, described Senator Barau as a reform-minded statesman whose legislative legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s fiscal policy.

“Senator Barau’s career reflects exceptional mastery of public finance management, sharpened through his leadership of Appropriation Committees in both chambers of the National Assembly,” he noted.

In his address, Senator Barau commended ANAN for its unwavering dedication to building Nigeria’s world-class financial and accountancy sector.

“ANAN deserves recognition for its strategic role in reinforcing ethics and governance through key collaborations and regulatory enhancements. These efforts have strengthened enforcement, surveillance, and compliance mechanisms—and they could support the National Assembly’s legislative agenda for reforming finance-related laws to bolster Nigeria’s financial integrity,” he said.

He also acknowledged ANAN’s strong focus on public sector financial management, highlighting accountants’ crucial role in ensuring transparency and efficient use of public funds.

“This aligns with the government’s emphasis on fiscal responsibility, as enshrined in the Fiscal Responsibility Act passed by the National Assembly,” he added.
