Yobe State Police Command has dismissed a report by some online platforms yesterday that the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat was under attack by suspected gunmen.

A statement by the police relations officer, SP Dingus Abdulkarim, said the command’s attention was drawn to a misleading report in circulation, titled, “Gunmen Attack NUJ Secretariat in Yobe, Police Officer Shot in Early Morning Assault,” stressing that no gunmen attacked the NUJ Secretariat in Damaturu.

“Let me tell you that, for clarity, on September 19, 2025, at about 0145hrs, a Police personnel of 41 PMF on guard at the NUJ Secretariat, Gashua Road, sustained an injury on his left foot while preventing a burglary attempt within the premises.

“There was no damage to the facility and at no point was any journalist or media personnel attacked or threatened in any form.

“However, the preliminary investigation indicates that the injury might have been caused by an object rather than a bullet, or possibly self-inflicted, as the officer on duty could not give a convincing account of the incident which occurred during the night.

“Further discreet investigation is ongoing to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding the event.

“The command strongly advises the NUJ and other stakeholders to avoid rushing into unverified claims or sensational publications that may cause unnecessary panic in the state.

“The Police and the NUJ share a collective responsibility to ensure accuracy and transparency in matters of public interest.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, has called for calm and assured the public that investigation has commenced. Updates will be provided in due course.”
