The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has unveiled it campaign plans for 2027 general elections as it presented candidates to the party faithful.
However, PDP convened an expanded caucus meeting at the Judges’ Quarters residence of former Governor, Samuel Ortom.
According to PDP, the gathering provided an opportunity for the party to officially introduce its candidates for various elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The state party’s spokesperson, Bright Yima Antyo, in a statement said discussions during the meeting centred on plans for setting up the governorship campaign council and strengthening campaign operations across the 23 local government areas of Benue State.
Antyo said the meeting was organised to present the party’s flag bearers to its leadership and stakeholders, “as well as deliberate on the composition and operational framework of the governorship campaign council. The council is expected to coordinate and guide campaign activities across the state.”
Speaking at the meeting, former Governor Samuel Ortom, called on members to reconnect with the principles upon which the party was founded in 1999, when it emerged with the mission of rescuing and providing effective leadership.
He emphasised that returning to these founding ideals was necessary to confront the prevailing difficulties faced by the people of Benue and work towards a better future for the state.
Ortom further commended party members for their contributions and support during the primary elections, which produced the PDP’s candidates for the various elective positions.
He observed that the exercise had been completed without litigation and appealed to members to preserve the unity and mutual understanding needed to advance the party’s interests.
While acknowledging the difficult political and economic circumstances, the former governor urged PDP faithful to remain committed to the party’s cause and maintain their determination as preparations for the 2027 general elections entered a critical phase.
In his remarks, the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, stressed the importance of unity, cooperation and collective responsibility among party leaders, stakeholders and members as the PDP intensifies efforts to position itself for the forthcoming elections.
Moro also faulted the performance of the incumbent administration, maintaining that Benue State required a government built on integrity, transparency and genuine commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
He emphasised the need for leadership that would prioritise accountability and deliver meaningful democratic benefits to the people.
Speaking on behalf of the party’s candidates, Dr Emmanuel Ukaa, assured the party that the candidates were prepared to work closely with the leadership, stakeholders and party structures to pursue their common objectives throughout the electoral process and beyond.
Ukaa appealed to party members to stand firmly behind the candidates, stressing that sustained unity, effective mobilisation and cooperation at all levels would be essential to securing the party’s desired outcome in the 2027 general elections.
“The expanded caucus meeting represents another step in the Benue PDP’s preparations for the 2027 general elections. Its deliberations were directed towards improving internal coordination, reinforcing party structures and developing an effective campaign strategy to be implemented across the state,” PDP said.
