Regulators of the downstream petroleum sector in Akwa Ibom State State – Petroleum Products Monitoring Committee (PPMC) – in collaboration with the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA), have begun clampdown on  activities of speculators disguised as petroleum product marketers and operators in the state.

The PPMC chairmen, Hon. Godwin Ekpo, disclosed this in Uyo, the state capital at the weekend, noting that the fraudulent and unwholesome practices in the sector “are at an all-time high in the State.

“Investigations have revealed that a significant number of filling stations are operating without valid licenses, lacking fire-fighting training and certification, operating without emergency preparedness/response plans and functioning without the required signage.”

He warned that the committee would not hesitate to wield the big stick against any oil sector fraudster. He expressed concern that suspected oil thieves in the sector have adulterated a significant percentage of petroleum products consumed in the state.

To avoid being axed, the PPMC boss directed that all the affected outlets should regularise their operations with the NMDPRA with immediate effect.

“All operators and marketers are hereby directed to regularise their documentations with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the State Fire Service without delay, and to display the same prominently at their outlets.

“Tanker drivers and owners are further reminded to transport only legally sourced petroleum products with proper documentation, including destination and identification, and to ensure that their vehicles are adequately equipped for fire and other emergencies.

“The general public is strongly advised to remain vigilant and report to the relevant authorities any filling station.

operating without a valid license or signage, selling adulterated products,

engaging in under-dispensing of products and operating without fire -fighting equipment and emergency preparedness measures.

“All operators, consumers, and members of the public deserve fairness, a safe working environment, healthy market competition, and value for their money,” he stressed

The PPMC, he added, was currently carrying out monitoring and compliance exercises, adding that “any operator, driver or business found wanting would be sanctioned, fined and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
